Chapter 86

א לא אסרה תורה אלא בדמות ד' פנים בהדי הדדי
1 The Torah prohibited only the making of the likeness of the four faces together.
ב אלא מעתה פרצוף אדם לחודיה תשתרי אלמה תניא כל הפרצופות מותרין חוץ מפרצוף אדם
2 According to this, a human face by itself should be permitted; so why was it taught: “All faces are permissible except that of a human face”!
ג אמר רב יהודה בריה דרב יהושע מפרקיה דרבי יהושע שמיע לי לא תעשון אתי לא תעשון אותי אבל שאר שמשין שרי
3 Judah the son of R. Joshua said: At the public lecture of R. Joshua I learned: You shall not make with me [“with me”] [this should be rendered as though it was] “You shall not make Me” [oti], but the other attendants are permitted.
ד ושאר שמשין מי שרי והתניא (שמות כ, כג) לא תעשון אתי לא תעשון כדמות שמשי המשמשין לפני במרום כגון אופנים ושרפים וחיות הקדש ומלאכי השרת
4 But are the other attendants permitted? Has it not been taught: “You shall not make with Me” you shall not make according to the likeness of My attendants who serve before Me in the heights, such as the Ophanim, Seraphim, the holy Hayyot and Ministering Angels!
ה אמר אביי לא אסרה תורה אלא שמשין שבמדור העליון
5 Abaye explained: The Torah prohibited only the the attendants who are in the highest stratum.
ו ושבמדור התחתון מי שרי והתניא אשר בשמים לרבות חמה ולבנה כוכבים ומזלות ממעל לרבות מלאכי השרת
6 Are, then, those in the lower stratum permitted? Has it not been taught: “That is in heaven,” this is to include the sun, moon, stars and planets; “above,” this is to include the Ministering Angels!
ז כי תניא ההיא לעובדם
7 That teaching alludes to worshipping them.
ח אי לעובדם אפילו שילשול קטן נמי אין הכי נמי ומסיפיה דקרא נפקא דתניא אשר בארץ לרבות ימים ונהרות הרים וגבעות מתחת לרבות שילשול קטן
8 But if it is a matter of worshipping them, even a tiny worm is also [prohibited]! That is indeed so, and this is derived from the continuation of the verse; for it has been taught: “Or that is in the earth,” this is to include seas, rivers, mountains and hills; “beneath,” this is to include a tiny worm.
ט ועשייה גרידתא מי שרי והתניא לא תעשון אתי לא תעשון כדמות שמשי המשמשין לפני במרום כגון חמה ולבנה כוכבים ומזלות
9 But is the mere making of them permitted? Has it not been taught: “You shall not make with Me,” you shall not make according to the likeness of My attendants who serve before Me in the heavens, the sun, moon, stars and planets!
י שאני ר"ג דאחרים עשו לו
10 It was different with R. Gamaliel because others made [the chart] for him.
יא והא רב יהודה דאחרים עשו לו וא"ל שמואל לרב יהודה שיננא סמי עיניה דדין
11 But there is the case of R. Judah for whom others made [a design on a seal], and Shmuel said to him, Toothy one! Blind its eyes!”
יב התם בחותמו בולט ומשום חשדא דתניא טבעת שחותמה בולט אסור להניחה ומותר לחתום בה חותמה שוקע מותר להניחה ואסור לחתום בה
12 That was a case of a protruding seal and because of suspicion [that it might be worshipped, Shmuel objected to it]; for it has been taught: A signet-ring which has a protruding ring, it is forbidden to wear it, but it is permitted to seal with it; and if the signet is sunk in, one may put the ring on but not seal with it.
יג ומי חיישינן לחשדא והא בי כנישתא דשף ויתיב בנהרדעא דאוקמי ביה אנדרטא והוו עיילי ביה אבוה דשמואל ולוי ומצלו בגויה ולא חיישי לחשדא רבים שאני
13 But are we concerned with the suspicion [that an object might be worshipped]? Behold in the synagogue of Shaf Veyativ in Nehardea a statue was set up, and Shmuel’s father and Levi entered it and prayed there without worrying about the possibility of suspicion!<br>It is different when there are many people together.
יד והא רבן גמליאל דיחיד הוה כיון דנשיא הוא שכיחי רבים גביה ואיבעית אימא דפרקים הואי
14 But R. Gamaliel was a single individual! Since he was the Nasi, many people were always found with him. Or if you wish I can say that [his chart] was in sections.
טו ואיבעית אימא להתלמד שאני דתניא (דברים יח, ט) לא תלמד לעשות אבל אתה למד להבין ולהורות:
15 Or if you wish I can say that when it is for the purpose of study it is different; as it has been taught: “You shall not learn to do,” (Deuteronomy 18:9) but you may learn in order to understand and teach.
טז רשב"ג אומר וכו': איזו הן מכובדין ואיזו הן מבוזין
16 Rabban Shimon b. Gamaliel etc. Which utensils are respectable and which disgraceful?
יז אמר רב מכובדין למעלה מן המים מבוזין למטה מן המים ושמואל אמר אלו ואלו מבוזין הן אלא אלו הן מכובדין שעל השירין ועל הנזמים ועל הטבעות
17 Rav said: The respectable are those which [have the figures] above the water, the disgraceful those which have them under the water. Shmuel said: Both these kinds are to be regarded as disgraceful. Rather, those that are respectable are those which are on bracelets, nose-rings and signet-rings.
יח תניא כוותיה דשמואל מכובדין שעל השירין ועל הנזמים ועל הטבעות מבוזין שעל היורות ועל הקומקמסין ועל מחמי חמים ושעל הסדינין ועל המטפחות:
18 It is taught in agreement with Shmuel: The respectable images are those that are on bracelets, nose-rings and signet-rings; the disgraceful are those on kettles, pots, vessels for boiling water, sheets and towels.
יט <big><strong>מתני׳</strong></big> רבי יוסי אומר שוחק וזורה לרוח או מטיל לים אמרו לו אף הוא נעשה זבל שנאמר (דברים יג, יח) לא ידבק בידך מאומה מן החרם:
19 Rabbi Yose says: He may grind [an idol] to powder and scatter it to the wind or throw it into the sea. They said to him, even so it may then become manure, as it says, “let nothing that has been proscribed stick to your hand (Deuteronomy 13:18)”.
כ <big><strong>גמ׳</strong></big> תניא אמר להם רבי יוסי והלא כבר נאמר (דברים ט, כא) ואת חטאתכם
20 GEMARA. It has been taught: R. Yose said to [the rabbis]: Has it not been stated, “Your sin,
